Foal diary

Mojave Moon
Brown colt by Singspiel out of Moon Cactus

Hannah Hey there! I was born on 5 February 2006. I live with a foster mare called Hannah as my mum died when I was born. Her name was Moon Cactus and she was a very good racehorse and is also the mother of one of the stallions who lives here at Dalham, Doyen.

Hannah looks after me very well, as you can see! She doesn't look like the other mums as she isn't a thoroughbred. There are lots of mares like her on the farm ready to look after us if anything happens to our real mums.

Cassie & Hannah On 8 August, it was time for me to leave Hannah and move to a new field with some other foals. This is called being weaned. I missed her at first, but I am happy now and love galloping around the field with my new friends.

In the photo, you can see me saying hello to Cassie, one of the people who helps to look after me.

Here I am in February 2007 running around with my friends.

On 1 January, I officially turned one - it's when all racehorses have their birthdays and I am now known as a yearling. At the moment, I'm living at White Lodge Stud, just a few miles from where I was born.

My name is now officially Mojave Moon. I’m still quite cheeky even though I am
doing plenty of work at Darley’s pre-training yard in Newmarket while I wait to
be assigned to a trainer.

Here I am warming up on the trotting rings and then enjoying a canter on
Hamilton Hill.

In June 2008, I moved to Chantilly in France to the yard of top trainer Andre Fabre, who also trained my half-brother Doyen in the early part of his career.

I had just one race as a two-year-old in the Prix de Belleville at Longchamp in Paris in October 2008. Now I'm three and I made my first visit to the racecourse this year on 29 March 2009, finishing second in the Prix Empery at Saint-Cloud.

A month later I won my very first race at another racecourse in Paris, the Priz Mendez at Maisons-Laffitte. This was a special place to win as Maisons-Laffitte is the twin town to the place where I was born and raised, Newmarket. The race was run over a mile-and-a-half, which was the distance at which my big brother Doyen and sister Moonshell were best. Winning must run in my family - I am my mum's sixth foal to win a race!

In July I won again, this time at a racecourse in Vichy which is quite a long way from home but I didn't mind the journey as it was fantastic to win again.

Just a few weeks later, I travelled to Deauville which is near the seaside to race again. Although I didn’t manage to win, I did finish second and this was a very good performance as this was a Group Two race.
