Fruitful foal sales

Another season has ended, with Darley sires both established and up-and-coming proving popular

The foal and breeding stock sales for 2012 are now complete, with some pretty spectacular results for the offspring of Darley sires.

Riding high after a tremendous first season with runners, including G2 Royal Lodge Stakes winner Steeler, Raven's Pass (pictured) had nine of his weanlings sell for an average of £144,627. Those included his top-price of 300,000gns paid by Shadwell for a colt out of Silk Trail, a winning daughter of Jersey Stakes heroine Satin Flower, who is in turn the dam of G1 winner Lujain.

The ever dependable Dubawi, with two more G1 winners in 2012 bringing his tally to nine at the highest level, posted an average of £143,150 for six foals offered and sold. Fractionally behind him was New Approach, the champion freshman sire. Members of his third crop achieved an average price of £124,500 for ten sold – a figure in excess of five times his fee of £22,500 when these weanlings were conceived.

Shamardal’s foal average was only just shy of six figures, settling at £99,898 for five sold, including 115,000gns for a colt out of the Gone West mare Pioneer Bride who was pinhooked by Yeomanstown Stud.

Exceed And Excel is another sire to have had a fantastic year in 2012 and he was all the rage at the foal sales. A whopping 24 weanlings sold throughout the season for an average of £58,660, with three of them being knocked down for six-figure prices at Tattersalls.

Teofilo also had plenty of representatives in the ring and his 15 sold achieved an average of £56,529. His bestseller was the 140,000-guinea colt bought by RBS, who is a half-brother to German champion two-year-old Night Lagoon, herself the dam of G1 Gran Premio del Jocky Club Italiano winner Novellist.
