Maputo continues to climb the ranks

Progressive son of Cape Cross takes the G3 Royal Whip Stakes

Maputo, a progressive three-year-old son of Cape Cross, continued his progression up the ranks on Sunday August 11 when winning on his first foray into Group company in the G3 Royal Whip Stakes at the Curragh. After making his seasonal debut only in May this season, he has now won six of his seven starts including taking a top handicap at Newmarket's July meeting by six lengths and the Listed Glasgow Stakes last time out.

A Darley homebred, he is out of the Secretariat mare Insijaam, a Stakes-winning half-sister to the Champion Hatoof and from the family of this season's Irish Derby winner Trading Leather (Teofilo). Now retired from stud duties, Insijaam has also produced the G1 juvenile filly Pictavia who went onto win the G3 Select Stakes.

Maputo is one of 11 Stakes winners for Cape Cross this season including the progressive Guest of Honour, the high-earning Windhoek, yesterday's Listed-winning filly Amazonas and a pair of European-bred Australian winners in Jet Away and Julienas.
